LONDONS GEOLOGY AS DETECTED FROM HAMPSTEAD HEATH21st February 2002A Geowalk with Di ClementsWe found out how Londons geology has influenced the development of this great city. Old industrial pits, underground water supplies and the local rocks all provide clues to Londons growth. From the heights of Hampstead Heath there is a spectacular view over London, and from this vantage point we discussed the structure of the Thames Valley and how Africas collision with Europe has influenced the siting of the Capital. We looked for clues to the underlying rocks in the old sand and brick pits, on the roots of fallen trees and in the spring lines and discuss the deep geology that lies beneath. All of these have had a profound influence on the building of London. All photographs © 2002 George Gibbons Click on any picture to enlarge the view |
